Safety Stand Down Day declared a huge success across the group
03 Jul 2025
On Wednesday 11th June all business units within the Logson Group took part in our annual Health & Safety Stand Down Day.
An initiative created and managed by our Head of Group Health, Safety & Environment , Dan Watts, this year’s objective was about Positive Safety Interactions and the launch of a new reporting procedure to support this.
Our robust We Make It Safe Vision and its principles and objectives gives a clear framework for the importance we place on health, safety and wellbeing, but also gives scope for development and evolving procedures to encourage ongoing engagement in delivering the vision at all times and by all staff and stakeholders.
Key objectives
Key objectives of the day were:
• Raising awareness
• Identifying areas for improvement
• Continuing to improve our Health & Safety culture
• Launching a new reporting procedure to promote positive safety interactions
Dan Watts commented; “Taking a day to refocus our teams on our health and safety vision, principles and objectives is hugely important and has proved to have a positive impact on re-engaging team members and reminding them of their responsibilities.
“This year was no exception; indeed, feedback from our sites has been hugely positive.”
On this occasion teams gathered to view a video prepared by Dan, explaining the new reporting procedure and the objectives of the day. Each site managed their own itinerary to ensure production and customer service wasn’t compromised, with some sites enjoying a whole staff lunch or snacks whilst the video was watched, and site MDs and Health and Safety leads worked with colleagues to explain the task in hand.
Regional successes
Whilst every regional site delivered exactly what we hoped, some were more creative in their presentations and activities.
Boxes and Packaging (Birmingham) used Swiss cheese as a prop in their presentation to reinforce the ‘Swiss Cheese Model’ used in risk analysis and management.
Over in Boxes and Packaging (Merseyside) a fun exercise took place to move a corrugated cardboard house around a course reinforcing the importance of teamwork in achieving health and safety objectives and why best practice health and safety is about looking out for and working together to keep each other safe.
Many sites held small group sessions to maximise engagement, delivering refresher training on existing reporting procedures before launching the new ProSTART reporting procedure which is to be used to report safe behaviours, good practice and improvement ideas.
Learning outcomes
Each team member was expected to complete a ProSTART report, and these were submitted to the leadership teams at each site for investigation and implementation as appropriate.
Already some sites have reported they have instigated these improvements to be made or indeed, have completed them depending upon their complexity and third-party contractor involvement.
All ProSTARTs submitted are to be reviewed by Dan Watts and Group CEO, David Richardson, with the ones showing the most initiative, simplicity or ones which could be implemented at multiple sites receiving commendation.
David concluded; “It is evident how important health and safety is to us all and we recognise it is an ever-evolving process. This is why it’s important to host days like this where people work together, perhaps with new colleagues, to view their workplace with a fresh perspective.
“My thanks go to Dan and our health and safety leads at each site, but also to everyone who works for Logson for their ongoing commitment and support in achieving our health and safety goals.”
