Introducing Durham Box

02 Sep 2025

Durham Box was acquired by Logson Group in July 2023 and since then has received significant investment to elevate its capabilities even further.

It’s always been known for its production and print capabilities being market leading, but the purchase and commissioning of the UK’s first digital die-cut machine further enhanced its offering to the corrugated packaging sector. This takes a new approach to die-cutting, with the traditional mechanical cutting process being replaced with a series of high-powered lasers.

Durham Box was established in 1989 and has been owned by the same people, the Morris family, ever since. Indeed, current Managing Director, Dan Morris, retains a shareholding in the business and is still involved in both the strategic future and day-to-day operations of the business.

Dan commented: “I have grown up around this business and when my parents decided to take a step back, becoming part of the largest independent corrugated group in the UK seemed to make perfect sense.

“Since becoming part of the Logson Group we have enjoyed greater resilience, ideas sharing across the group and the support of some of the best packaging professionals in the industry.”

Production capabilities

The team at Durham Box has a superb range of corrugated packaging machinery available, including:
– Small to large variant casemakers
– Analogue and digital Print capability
– Rotary & Flat-bed die-cutting
– Laser die-cutting
– Multi-point glueing
– Stitchers

Their Nozomi C‑18000 single‑pass digital UV‑LED inkjet press, offers CMYK + white ink printing directly onto brown kraft corrugated board, enabling vibrant, high‑resolution graphics, spot‑gloss finishes and full Pantone colour matching on eco‑substrates.

Durham Box operates a suite of BOBST finishing equipment, including 2 x BOBST Vision die‑cutters, along with 2 x Bobst multi-point gluers. Further finishing capabilities include high-speed tape application, plus large-format flat-bed die-cutting, along with dedicated facilities for assembly, collation & fulfilment. These capabilities position Durham Box alongside sister company The Cardboard Box Company and as a leader in the UK for high‑quality printed corrugated packaging.

This combination of high‑speed digital print and precision finishing gives them:
• Exceptional flexibility, with the ability to run short-runs, versioned print jobs, and prototype runs with minimal setup.
• Seamless POS/FSDU displays and retail-ready packaging in one workflow, ensuring consistent branding and finish throughout.
• Speedy turnaround and high-quality presentation that many competitors can’t match, especially on environmentally friendly brown kraft boards.

Packaging and people

Durham Box has approximately 105 employees, many of whom have been with the company for years and are actively involved in the local communities near Bishop Auckland.

The company’s 2020 -2021 expansion included hiring to increase production, sales and design headcount, ahead of new machine installations, demonstrating proactive workforce planning at the company.

Their corporate culture aligns with family-owned, community-focused values, promoting stability, employee loyalty and internal progression.

Their development approach includes:
• Onboarding and technical training on complex machinery (EFI Nozomi, BOBST, die‑cutters, glueing lines).
• Cross‑training across print, finishing, design and operations to build a flexible, multi‑skilled team.
• Career progression pathways, with opportunities to grow from machine operator to supervisory or sales/design roles, supported by internal promotion.
• Succession planning, implied by long service and local recruitment tied to the 20 new jobs created in their expansion plan
* Participation in external training partnerships or apprenticeships.

Designed for success

Durham Box also invests heavily in its design and is unafraid to challenge perceptions, pushing the boundary of corrugated design to deliver amazing results for customers.
Across both construction and print design, the team of experienced structural packaging designers and graphic artists are all focused on ensuring the best possible outcome customers to protect product and promote brands.

Whether a customer knows the packaging they require, or if corrugated is a totally new venture to them, the team offers full technical support from initial enquiry, through the design process to the end product.
The team is also experts in colour management and print finishes. From simple one colour text to four colour tone work, they liaise directly with our customers throughout the reprographic process. From the initial concept to the approval of the finished packaging design, they ensure a quick turnaround of even the most complex of proposals, making sure the customer’s vision, brand and logos are accurately reproduced.

Their graphic design team liaise with their chosen ink supplier on colour management and specialist finishes, such as metallic inks and varnishes, consulting with their print plate provider through the design process, ensuring the finished design can be fully replicated in their manufacturing process.
